Science Instruction

Currently we partner with schools across the U.S., United Kingdom and Asia that have adopted Stan-X courses that enable students to perform open-ended research using the fruit fly, Drosophila. Fruit flies allow rapid testing of hypotheses, and generation of original scientific data. Fly experiments are economical and allow more scheduling flexibility than other, larger experimental models. Stan-X courses open the exciting possibility of making novel scientific discoveries, and generating data and resources that can be published and used by practicing scientists. Currently there several courses that partnering schools can adopt. These include courses that generate new fly strains through transposon mutagenesis (Core course), molecular biology and DNA injection (Transgenic Fly Course), gene editing (CRISPR course) or high throughput genomic DNA sequencing (Genomics Fly Course). Each course can be tailored by a school to fit their schedule and resources. In many cases, partner schools now offer multiple Stan-X courses during the standard academic year, and in summer terms.
